DIY Holder for Charging Cell Phone

February 25, 2013 by SmartGirl 7 Comments

DIY Cell Phone HolderIt’s Make It Monday!!  I love the feeling of getting up knowing I need to make something new.  My oldest is home sick today and she dismissed my first project and said I didn’t really MAKE something, just fixed something up and it would be better as a Thrift Shop Thursday project.  So that brought me back to square one.  Well it didn’t take me long for idea #2, because I walked into her room to find this…

how to fix cell phone clutter

(Yes, my 11-year-old has a cell phone.  She’s had one since she was 8.  Go ahead and judge me.  I can take it.)  Luckily I had just pinned a really great tutorial to my Pinterest board on how to make a holder for charging a cell phone.  It’s from the blog Make It & Love It, which is now one of my inspiration blogs.  As in, I hope my blog is as fantastic as Ashley’s is one day. I already had all the supplies I needed, which my husband will be happy about.  It cracks me up that I couldn’t find an empty/almost empty baby lotion bottle.  How many of those have I thrown out???  My eleven year old wanted to use duct tape instead of fabric, which ended up being a necessity and not a choice.

First I tested to make sure the cell phone fit

Then I drew an outline of where I needed to cut.

Then I decided I wanted it to be taller because her phone’s so long.

Then I started cutting, which wasn’t too bad until I got to the “hole” in the back for the prongs to go through.  I drilled 4 small holes in the corners and started to cut… and then the entire thing cracked.
I’m not sure if lotion bottles are easier to cut.  I am thinking yes, because this thing is not meant to be squeezed. It worked out anyway because we were using duct tape.
My daughter chickened out and made me tape it.  This is how it turned out.

There was NO WAY to make the pattern match up.  Or I am a moron.  But I could not make it happen no matter which way I tried.   Here is the holder and charger just waiting for the phone.  (Note: There was a lot of comments on Ashely’s post debating the safety of this type of product.  My holder was not resting on the prongs of the charger.)

Thanks. Safe? I don’t know why it wouldn’t be. There is no plastic or duct tape touching the socket or prongs. And even if it did touch, it’s plastic. Think about those plastic child protector gadgets that get stuck INSIDE the outlet. Plastic won’t conduct the electricity in a standard household outlet.
