I was at the thrift store on Friday, mostly dropping stuff off, but I couldn’t help myself from going in and seeing if I could find any goodies. I was shopping at Red, White, and Blue, the thrift store associated with the Vietnam Veterans of America. My best purchase to date at this store is a brown North Face fleece I got my 10-year-old, for only $3.95!! (She’s wearing it in the pics below) It totally depends who’s pricing things, because I’ve seen baby sweaters priced at more than that. But who cares, I scored that day!! And I have the identical adult version, so now we can be twins. 🙂 On Friday, however, the only thing that caught my eye was a pair of shin guards for my son. They were 50% off $2.95, so I snatched those right up.
All day Saturday I wanted to hit Goodwill with my daughter because we haven’t been in a long time. She spent the afternoon puking her guts out, so that didn’t happen. Meanwhile, I checked out Young House Love and bam… that’s when I found the The Macklemore Thrift Shop Challenge! It was meant to be! 😉
This was the challenge:
Step #1. Go to a thrift shop with – just as the chorus of the song says – “$20 in your pocket” and take a picture.
OMG, I never have $20 bucks in my pocket! But I scraped some together and we were off to our favorite Goodwill store. It’s so convenient they are open on Sundays. Wow, I should have brushed my hair!
Step #2 was to spend your $20 any way you’d like and photograph your spoils.
Furniture was all 50% off so I carefully inspected everything, but ended up not getting anything. There was one table I liked. But even after 50% off it was still $20 and I really only wanted the legs. I have been wanting to make a new dining room table for a looooong time. But I skipped it. Nice legs though, huh? I ended up finding an awesome table (that needed NO work) on Craigslist. Check out that post here.
These frosted tiki glasses caught my eye and at $.89 I had to put them in my cart. I love the old school Disney World logo.
Step #3. Find one item (or more) referenced in the song and snap a pic.
Here’s the video: Macklemore’s Thrift Shop – G Rated Version
We found lots of luggage…
A keyboard…
A big a** coat…
Here are some things we couldn’t agree on… I liked this dress, but Smart Jr. didn’t.
She liked this sweater thing and I just didn’t think I’d wear it. It’s too complicated.
Here’s what we got and it came to just under $10, which doesn’t add up, but whatever:
(2) Walt Disney World Tiki cups – $.89 each
Glass Aunt Jemima bottle – $1.99
(2) Footie PJs – $1.99 each
Flannel nightgown – $1.99
Aeropostale T-shirt – $2.99
(2) baskets that hang from the wall – $.99 for both
“Keep Christ in Christmas” car magnet – $.99
Here’s a closeup of the Aunt Jemima container. Not sure what I am going to do with it yet! I was kind of afraid my husband would be like WTF, but he totally loves it AND the tiki glasses. He wishes they had MORE tiki glasses!
We are overachievers and were determined to spend the whole $20, so we went to another Goodwill store today. Yes, two in one day, plus two new consignment stores we’ve never been to.
We didn’t really look for anything else from the song, but I did find another one of those doll chairs and snapped a picture. These things are everywhere!
Again, we spend just under $10 and this time we got:
A beach chair – $2.99
Disney Trivia game – $3.99 (We already gave this away to a family that is obsessed with Disney, we went to their house for a Super Bowl party tonight)
Random peacock feather thing – $.99
NWT Baby’s 1st photo book – $.99 (I am going to fill this with pictures and give to my nephew/godson)
We popped lots of tags and had a great day. Thanks for the unofficial challenge!! Best of all… I’ve got nothing that needs spray paint or any other fixing up. Well, maybe those hanging baskets.
Here’s a really bad video on our way to a Super Bowl party after a long day of thrift shopping: http://youtu.be/yUI3O0NQ1AA?t=36s
You’re at my Goodwill! The one in Stratford! The manager Al and his wife love me. Al has a tendency to slash prices even more for me, even. Heh. And I know the entire staff by name (since before they got those shirts with the “my name is” bit on them!). It’s kind of ridiculous. One of the other 180-something people who linked up to YHL went there too, I noticed. I commented on her entry as well. She took pictures of the same red suitcases as you! http://www.buttonwoodcottage.com/2013/02/the-mackelmore-thrift-shop-challenge.html
I am way too excited to find local people… And I really need to not want those red suitcases to match one I already own. :/
Hi Bethany! You are my first real comment EVER!!! I love you 🙂 Al does not really care for me, but two of the woman that work there are great. When I was pregnant with my second daughter I bought all of her baby clothes there. I’ve had some good furniture finds too. I can’t wait to blog about all my past accomplishments.
Thanks again for me being my first comment. I am off to Once Upon A Child to sell four bins full of clothes. My 11 year old went on a shopping spree there yesterday. It was our first time in there. Have you ever been?
Yay! I am glad to be your first! Perhaps I will always have a special place in your heart. 😉
I have no idea really why Al likes me so much. But I embrace it! And I think it matters to the staff that I treat them all more like friends than just workers. I ask about their kids/spouses/etc. and reference things we discussed in the past. I worked retail so I remember how much it meant to be treated well. Enough rambling, sorry. Heh.
I need to actually use my poor little blog. I do have a few improvements for my apartment in the works, so I have some material to use. If my husband and I had a place of our own, I’d be able to DO more and have much more to say. Perhaps less time to say it, though. But, still, I could make enough “OHMYLANTA LOOK WHAT I FOUND AT THE THRIFT STORE!” posts to gag even a seasoned thrifter. I may need to let you in on my seeeeekrit garage sale place that has given me some of my best deals. I haven’t told anyone else, yet. But you seem like good people. 😉
One of my first jobs was at a Once Upon a Child! I was caring for an awesome little girl for a family friend, but now that I don’t have her anymore, I need to go try to sell the fabulous things I bought for her. I hadn’t even thought of the place and was just going to try to Ebay some of the things. OUAC is easier. Sidenote: You can find some really great stuff for yourself at Plato’s Closet! It’s the teen/young adult version of Once Upon A Child and you can find some really cute things there. Not as good as the stuff at my Goodwill, necessarily. But it’s all hit or miss in any second-hand situation.
Apologies for my incredible rambling! And you’re welcome. 🙂
Bethany, I would love to check out your top secret shopping place! I really need to finish up projects around my house, but I have been working a lot lately, which is a good thing! My daughter and I went to Plato’s Closet too. Actually, we went there first and she got 3 sweatshirts, then over to OUAC. Our first time at both places, but we’ll definitely be back.
Where is the one with the brick front, btw? It looks kind of like the one in… Marlton, I think? But I haven’t been there in so long that I can’t be sure.
Yup, you guessed it, but I think it’s actually Mt. Laurel. It’s tiny in there, but I have had some awesome finds in there too.
