I made over my daughter’s room this weekend, but it was more like putting on the finishing touches of a makeover that’s been in the works for years. Here’s a little trip down memory lane.
Just to be thorough, here are a few pictures of her room at our last house. She lived here from ages 3-7. I surprised her while she was away at my mom’s for the weekend and painted the harlequin diamonds on her walls. What a pain in the butt! I also made the curtains with my minimal sewing skills. The bed was $5 at Goodwill. I painted it. The side table was a trash pick I painted pink. The chandelier is from Home Depot circa 2005. This pic is also from 2005. The rug is currently in her sister’s room, the couch is in our basement playroom and I just threw out last week.
Then in 2007 she decided she didn’t like the yellow anymore, so I painted all the yellow purple. And yes I had to re-tape the entire thing! I bought the bed/dress/vanity set off eBay.
We bought our current house in 2009, and this picture was taken the day of our home inspection, before we bought this house. That’s 7-year-old Smart Jr telling me what she wants done in her new room. She always hated that ceiling fan.
Phase 1 was to paint her room. It was the first room I painted after we moved in. I also gutted her closet, painted that and installed a ClosetMaid system similar to this. After that, I decided to build my own closet organizer and will write a post about that soon.
Phase 2 was to move her bed to the middle of the room to cut down on her floor space. Yes, cut down! More floor space = more mess. No thank you! As you can see, my plan didn’t work.
Phase 3 was to get better furniture for her needs. That was one of my first posts, read it here. This was the result of Phase 3. There’s a giant desk that matches that dresser but I never took any pictures of it in Phase 3.
Phase 4 happened a little at a time. We got a “new” dresser from Craigslist for $30 that fit nicely under the wall shelf. The tall chest of drawers got moved to her sister’s room. Smart Jr spray painted the knobs on the matching dresser blue.
This is what it looks like now! A room fit for an almost 12-year-old. She also painted the old trash picked side table blue. I replaced the carpet and curtains and painted the chevron wall. To read specifically about the wall, check out the Chevron Wall Tutorial.
That’s obviously not a new comforter. It’s the same bedding, same wall decor, shelf, etc. Notice the chandelier is the same one from her room at our old house. The side table and bed are also the ones from that room.
