Office 4: Progress on the Built-in

December 30, 2013 by SmartGirl 1 Comment

Apparently I’ll do anything to procrastinate and not finish the bookshelf, including writing this post. Obviously I didn’t have it finished by Christmas {shocker!} even though I had already built (most of) the first section of the wall unit {post here}.  There were three sections left to build and at this point I’ve at least started each of those sections before Christmas.  Let me bring you up to speed…

This section has a floor vent that needs to be extended out under the cabinet.  I tried to find ducting small enough to fit under there, but it just wasn’t happening, so I am going to just box it off with wood.  Once I put a piece of wood over this frame at the bottom, the air coming out of the vent will be forced to the front, where I’ll install a vent cover.  It just hasn’t happened yet.View of ventI built a similar box to support the MDF on top and screwed that to the wall. Bookshelf base with room for ventThen I added the upper unit which was kind of tricky because it’s just the shelves, which are attached to the wall, holding the sides in place.  I had to have Smart Jr hold up one side while I screwed the shelf brackets to the wall.  It worked out in the end, so it’s all good. Two shelves installedNow that you’re seeing these units next to each other, your probably thinking the same thing I am… Why in the world are they different sizes?  Yeah, I’m not going to change it now, but I wish I had put more thought into my design.  It looked fine on paper and remember this design all started with a wall unit I bought from Craigslist {post here} and the dimensions came from that unit.  Whatever, they’re still going to hold a bunch of crap, and that’s what matters.  I’m thinking of these built-ins as practice for the ones I want to build in the family room next.  I’ve learned plenty of things already.  🙂  Oh another thing I messed up is that the top shelf should be lower to account for a trim piece I need to put across the top.  That top shelf is going to end up being mighty short.  Oops.4 shelves installedWhy is there a space between?  Good question.  There will be shelves in-between the two units and more to the far left.  The bottom shelf is attached to two 2x4s which rest on the floor.2x4 base for bottom shelfThe far left side is similar.  It’s attached to two 2x4s at the bottom and a piece of scrap wood (that you won’t see when I’m finished) on the top.Far left shelf unit - 2x4 baseI got bored with building so I started painting and then I had to take a break for Christmas and this is where I’m at now.Started paiting bookshelves

Progress on the built-insSo I’m going to go finish up while hubs is at the indoor water park with the girls.  Wish me luck!
