Garden Week 2: Putting the Plant in Transplant

April 22, 2014 by SmartGirl Leave a Comment

Happy Earth Day!!  In honor of Earth Day, I decided to dig up about 20 plants and move them around the yard this week.  I wish I were joking!  Well I am joking about the Earth Day part, but not about moving everything around.  And I sprained my finger in the process, so it’s super fun typing right now with two of my left fingers taped together.  Oh well, that’s what I get.  In all fairness I should throw hubby under the bus for this one because he was supposed to help me move the giant skip laurel before he left for Bahrain, but it didn’t happen.  So I decided to move it myself.Decided to move this skip laurel by myselfHow I even go it out of the hole it was in is a miracle.I managed to get the Skip Laurel out of the holeIf hubby were here we would have heaved it into the wheelbarrow to move it, like we did with the other two last year.  But there was no way.  When you can’t use sheer muscle, it’s time to use some brains, so I decided to drag it on a tarp.Transplanting a Skip LaurelDoesn’t the yard look  so gloomy right now?  I can’t wait for everything to grow, grow, grow.  Here’s the hole I dug next to another skip laurel that was transplanted here from the same area last year.  I like this placement better because it blocks the view of all the crap behind the shed.  If I had the money I’d just buy another skip laurel, but these bad boys were like $75 and I never spend that much on plants.  I only justified it to block off the neighbor, but now we have all Photinia over there, except for this one skip laurel, so I figured I’d just add one last Photinia.  And that of course meant digging one up from elsewhere in the yard.New hole for Skip LaurelGetting it in there wasn’t too too bad.  Luckily I have a lot of experience moving giant plants around.  Hehe.Drag it in first - then straighten it outAnd now the two skip laurels are very happy together again.  But clearly that rhododendron has to be moved too.  As did 2 other rhododendron, a blackberry twig bush, Photinia, rose, and butterfly bush among other things.  Helping to block the area behind shed - need to move the rhododendrun nowHere’s the transplanted Photinia in place.  It looks so sad now, but hopefully will grow quickly like the one next to it.Replaced the skip laruel with a transplanted photiniaI think I ‘m going to wait for hubby to get home to move the other skip laurel (that has now lived in 2 spots of our yard) over by these two to add even more evergreen screening.  I can put the butterfly bush where that one is.  But I definitely SHOULD wait for hubby to get home.  Or I could skip my Insanity workout for today and move it myself.  In other yard news, the nectarine tree is blooming as beautiful as ever.  This was a $4 clearance tree at Lowe’s I bought 2 years ago and it has made tremendous progress in our yard.Helping to block the area behind shed - need to move the rhododendrun nowNectarine tree always one of the first to blossomUnder the nectarine tree is our crazy strawberry patch and I saw the first flower this week.  I can’t wait for yummy strawberries.   We had more than we could eat last year.  (Read post HERE) First strawberry bloomCan't wait for some strawberriesI was just told by my younger daughter to get off the computer and go outside because it’s Earth Day.  So one last thing… I added a boat load of compost to the ivy I transplanted last week in hopes that it actually takes.  I didn’t water it though because it’s supposed to rain later today.Black GOLD - DIY backyard compost bin from palletsIvy gets some compostOperation skip laurel location was a success and as an added bonus I was outside working while the sun set.  The pictures don’t do it justice, but all of a sudden the woodland behind my house was pink and lit up brightly.  (No filter or touch-up here.)Beautify sunset turned the sky pinkI took a picture towards the front (west) of the house too.Beautiful sunset tonightSo again, HAPPY EARTH DAY!  I hope you’re able to get outside and enjoy, wherever you are.
