Garden Week 5: Getting Tons of Stuff Done

May 12, 2014 by SmartGirl 4 Comments

I am so happy with all the work that I’ve been able to get done in the yard this week!  And Mother’s Day was no exception!  Lots of work happened yesterday.  To recap from earlier in the week, hubby and I installed a drywell and drain near our shed.Make sure the pipe is always going down gradeI also planted more grass seed, but instead of using top soil, like I did on the side yard, I used compost!  Yup, we buy composted horse manure by the truck load and it’s awesome stuff.  I can’t seem to make enough compost, even with a 3 bin compost system, so it’s good to be able to buy extra.  I think hubby is picking up another load tomorrow.Using compost to start grass seedWhile I was prepping for the grass seed I decided to widen the garden beds, you know, so I would have less grass to maintain.  So I just started ripping out the rocks and moving them into a new configuration.Smart Girls DIY - Making wider garden bedsI also fixed up the other planting beds out front, the ones without a rock border.  I used a spade (like this one) to dig out a trench around the bed.Digging a trench around a planter bedIn the back yard, I decided to make supports for the raspberry plants growing in one of the raised beds.  I had been thinking of making something out of wood, but then I realized how much easier it would be to use these metal u-posts from Lowe’s.  Duh!  This was so easy and will last forever, unlike wood.  I just added some twine around the posts and voila!Easy Raspberry Stakes

I sanded and spray painted these lounge chairs…I spray painted these rusty ounge chairsThen built this patio area to put them on.  The chairs are still drying and I haven’t decided what, if anything, I want to plant in between the pavers yet, but it’s ALMOST done.  I can’t wait to do some lounging!!!  Making a new patio area for my lounge chairsAnd finally, I did some work on another patio area, the first flagstone patio I installed.  It has Chocolate Chip Bugleweed growing in between the stones.  I dug a few clumps up and moved them to the perimeter.  This stuff grows like crazy!  Check out this post (last picture) to see what this area looked like less than a year ago.I should be relaxing on that benchSo I think that’s it for now, but I am on a mission to get stuff done before our Memorial Day party, so this week is going to be pretty hectic I’m sure.  I love getting stuff done!

You should post a photo of the grass now to show how much has sprouted in such a short time.
