Garden Week 9: Planting More Fruits and Veggies

June 9, 2014 by SmartGirl Leave a Comment

I vowed to plant more stuff from seed this year instead of buying plants.  But I am too lazy to start seeds indoors, so I wait until I can plant them directly in the raised garden beds.  Granted it’s been plenty warm enough to awhile, I finally got around to it this week.  And lucky me, I had 3 little helpers.  The girls made plant markers out of jumbo craft popsicle sticks and Sharpie Oil-based Paint Markers, our new favorite.  I went over them with Thompson’s WaterSeal because I already had some on hand.  We’ll see if the sticks hold up.  The girls had a blast making them even if they don’t last.Planting fruit and vegetable seeds and making plant markersDIY plant markers using sharpie paint markers and craft sticksMy girls made plant markers with popsicle sticks and sharpie oil-based paint markersAnd my little super guy helped me plant the seeds.  Here he is doing watermelon.  He’s got the helmet on because he was riding his quad.My super helper planting watermelon seedsThey got distracted at one point because a horse and buggy came riding down our street.  Isn’t our neighborhood cool?!Kids got distracted from plating when a horse and carriage rode byIsn't my neighborhood so cool - horse carriage rides through suburban neiighborhoodSpeaking of distracted, check out this video of them “taking a shower” in the window.  This is their new favorite thing and I don’t mind because it waters the plants in the process.

Getting back to the crops, the tomatoes are doing really well with the new staking system.Tomatoes are doing well with the new staking systemBut what’s not doing well are my Knockout Roses.  Something has been eating my beloved roses!  I’ve got to find a spay or something to keep that from getting worse.Knockout Roses being eaten by something
